!!! This is the Real Deal - a Genuine NATIVE Ruby & Sapphire Mine !!!
Ok - So you're trying to decide which Gem Mine to go to - well, there are a few bad reviews out there on Sheffield Mine, so let's talk about them -
Most bad comments refer to how few native stones one is likely to bring home. If you come here you might find rubies or sapphires or you might not. If you mine the Rainbow Buckets, you will Definitely find a Lot of gemstones that come from all around the world very quickly, but you won't likely find any Native Rubies or Sapphires!
We hope that you understand that Sheffield Mine is a Real Native Ruby & Sapphire Mine which means that the rubies and sapphires you find here Formed In the Ground that you are standing on! We are not a mine which has been enhanced with rubies & sapphires that come from the mines of India, Brazil or even Africa! We don't know if there is a ruby or sapphire in your bucket or not, because we didn't PUT it there. After considerable scrubbing, you'll know and if you are unsure - keep it! Check with the guys on the flume line or take it into the office. Even if it isn't a Ruby or Sapphire - it's yours to keep or toss out! Some seasons are more productive than others, but even in a great season, we can never guarantee how many or how large your stones will be. Some people go through several buckets and only find what we call "Braggin' Rights" - those are stones too small to cut & polish, while others find a "Honker" (a ruby or sapphire that weighs 30 carats or more) right off the bat in their first bucket.
The point of coming to our mine isn't to "get rich quick"!
When rubies & sapphires are found at a Salted or Enhanced Mine, they aren't hard to spot, and the sizes and quantities may be substantially more, BUT you're not the first to see them, touch them or own them - they went thru at least half a dozen hands before they got to you, so coming to a Native Mine is truly the "thrill of a Treasure Hunt"! Also, just because a stone is huge beyond belief, doesn't mean that the quality is great throughout - plus, the larger the stone, the costlier it is to get it cut, sometimes so much so that it is out of the range of the average pocket book to afford. We hope you'll come to love our atmosphere and our kind, fun loving staff who is there to help make your whole experience one to remember and share with your family & friends!
Now the next point that gets brought up is our Staff and their "lack of expertise" - the folks with that complaint must be confusing our mine with another mine, because our manager, Warren, and our main flume line attendant, Richard have each been in this business for over thirty years and David and Jack have each been in this business for over 15 years - they ALL know a ton of information on our local stones which they freely share without hesitation, ask them questions about stones from other areas and you might be surprised by how much knowledge they have about those as well, but expect them to know everything about every stone God ever created - that's not possible the're only human after all. As for any of our other employees - we take a lot of time to make sure that they at least know how to help you to find and recognize the rubies and sapphires in our dirt and most of them are very quick to learn and pass their new knowledge on to you.
At Sheffield Mine you'll get a 10 to 15 minute Orientation in the Mine Office before you even start on your first bucket. This is to help you to recognize what you are looking for and the BEST way to go about actually finding what you're looking for. To find these rubies and sapphires, you must get the rocks super clean otherwise you'll easily overlook what you came to find. Then we keep checking with you & encouraging you to ask us over and over again if necessary, to show you what the stones look like, to make sure your rocks are clean enough, and to help you in any way that we can. Our goal is for you to find as many Rubies and Sapphires as possible, and large ones too if they're there -
How else will you be able to tell your friends at home
about the Best Vacation Ever?!?!?!
Hope this helped to clear up a few things!

Starting April 1st, we'll be here everyday rain or shine ready to help you out. The economy is improving, but many folks are still stay-cationing, so no worries about waiting lines - it's back to being a lot more peaceful. So just come on down and enjoy yourself in the Great Smoky Mountains (the OLDEST mountain chain in the World!) and maybe you too will bring home a valuable piece of North Carolina in the form of a Squeaker or a Honker of a Ruby or Sapphire! Did you know that a Squeaker of 15 Carats up to 29 carats is Great, and a Honker of 30 Carats up to 99 carats is Awesome, and a Super Honker of 100 carats or MORE is Stupendous, but even a Ruby or Sapphire that weighs at least 4 Carats is often decent enough for cutting and setting into a Ring or if you find two, then into a pair of Earrings?
